At least 13 people killed and 98 hurt in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's key public works projects.

The crash took place on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” declared the national leader.

The leader reported that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The leader added plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the immediate past president, whose term finished the year before. This project was intimately linked to his government's strategic goals for the southern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The building of both train projects was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant expansion of its duties in national infrastructure. They were built at an fast-tracked pace, surpassing predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously sparked significant questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an earlier collision this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced several non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a major opposition party called for an prompt halt in the building and running of all similar projects.

This stoppage was requested pending a thorough safety audit. The party stated that the loss of life "requires prompt explanations."

In reply, the president insisted that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and management of these vital initiatives.
