Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside French aircraft in a combined operation on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the British defence ministry.
The location, pinpointed through intelligence, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was situated in mountainous terrain just above Palmyra in central Syria.
"The RAF jets used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a number of approach shafts providing entry to the facility... early reports indicate the strike was effective," the ministry announced.
There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the strike conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned safely, the ministry further stated.
The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.
Daesh - also known as Daesh - established militant control over parts of Syria and Iraq until 2019.
"This operation demonstrates British leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to stamp out any resurgence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey stated.
British military aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State following its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.
"I must thank all the members of British forces involved in this mission for their professionalism and their valour," he said. "They were part of numerous British personnel deployed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to remove terrorist threats who pose a risk to our way of life, shows how our armed forces are always on standby, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure domestically and strong abroad."
In December, the US military executed what it termed a "massive strike" on IS targets in Syria, following an attack killed two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.
The United Nations says Islamic State still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Iraq and Syria.
