The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Triumph at The Game Awards — A New Category May Address This Issue

As any significant honors show approaches, there’s always an outcry for the addition fresh award types to recognize overlooked contributions and fill the spirits of fans with niche passions.

A fellow writer has already made for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. The same goes for board games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification for why my demand stands as crucial and significant. This is the request: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why movie academies avoid this approach. Yet it remains an essential concession for the industry of gaming, which are so diverse they hardly constitute as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies presently include award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories effectively encompass a lot of ground, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Consider three of this year’s best games, all very different: building puzzles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers published annually lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition completely that year
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations in 2019
  • A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
  • Just some logic titles scraped into niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent small games, yet the craft of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Well-known matching games stand as most engaged experiences worldwide continuing this trend for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges famous sandbox experiences competing to become most purchased experience; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. It would be easy to populate a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude so many good games out.

To emphasize again, these represent titles without proper classification at major gaming awards. Logic title developers are working at the demanding boundary interactive creation, creating some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Comparable to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait generations.
